Celtic Dagger (Fitzjohn Mystery Series) (Kindle Edition)
My criteria for a good book is that I can't wait to get back
to it. Like all of us who love to read, we have other activities which
constantly pull us away from our books. Ms. Paterson's book created a definite
challenge for me. I never wanted to put it down, yet all my responsibilities
kept pulling at me as well. What did I do? I had no choice. The former won out
and was I ever rewarded for it!! The tone, the pace the plot the characters
were top notch. I felt like I had been treated to an author who was truly an
accomplished writer.
Don't miss this book!

Detective
Chief Inspector Fitzjohn could be the Miss Marple of Scotland yard. Patiently
sifting through clues, befriending the suspects and drawing his conclusions.
But Fitzjohn is not the main character, true he is holding the storyline
together. But it is James Wearing who hears the scuttlebut and runs into the bizarre
situations who keeps Fitzjohn informed.
Ms
Patterson draws her characters with a rich palette, you can see them in your
minds' eye. She draws you into the mystery from the prologue where the first
clue is given and takes you on a journey of discovery.
This is a
very enjoyable, relaxing read with well defined characters and plot. I am
looking forward to reading more Fitzjohn mysteries.

Wow. So many twists and turns. I really didn't know whodunit till the
end and that's a rare occurrence for me as much as I read. Excellent
setting, I've always wanted to see Australia and I'm getting to know a
lot about it that I didn't know through this series. Also I truly like
the main character Fitzjohn. He's one of those detectives who is so
intelligent and so good at what he does and yet so understated that you
have to grin wherever he pulls the rug out from under his intended
target. They never see it coming. I was also pleased with the turn of
events near the end of the book that took care of a problem within the
police department that had been causing him problems for years. I won't
say more but it rather poetic justice. Can't wait to get the next book
in this series.

This is my first Jill Paterson book and I would definitely read more of her books.Just finished reading this book and I loved it! This book has so many twists and turns that it keeps your attention to the end. And speaking of the end, while I did guess the type of ending this story would have, I was wrong in who the ending would include. So, you see, the authors twists and turns are really great! Keep your mind going trying to figure out who did it.
The story is well written. It is easy to read and understand, and with the multiple storylines in the book, that is a big plus. The plot is well explained. The story pacing is a bit slow in the beginning, but it sort of has to be as it has many mysteries in the story. If it was not a bit slow in the beginning while the author sets up the story, you would not be understanding what is going on and why.
The characters are well written and defined. They are easy to relate to and understand. While I love Nick, I do like Fitzjohn too. Fitzjohn is sort of like Poirot in how he operates.
I do recommend this book for mature teens on up. It is a great and intriguing mystery and I know you will love it like I did.

It was a really good read. I especially enjoyed it because I live in
Sydney and could visualise the places the characters were supposed to be
in. I had a little feeling that I knew who had done it but it wasn't
totally obvious until the last few pages. All in all a very good read.

adding of suspects, all with possible motives. Fitzjohn is a good
detective. A well woven plot. 4.0 out of 5 stars A good read,

Fitzjohn
is an interesting character who is surrounded by several other good characters!
It is rather fun reading about a mystery that takes place in a country about
which I know very little. I've had to use a map to get a sense of the places he
goes in his investigation but I've enjoyed gaining that insight about
Australia. It has encouraged me to make a visit some day. Anyway, I read this
e-book after completing the other Fitzjohn mystery that I had downloaded. I
guess that says something about how well I enjoyed the first one. It is also
interesting to me to learn a little bit more about the British language and
culture. I just hope his nemesis, Chief Grieg, will retire or otherwise get out
of the way and let Fitzjohn do his job! You think?

LIE (A Fitzjohn Mystery) (Kindle Edition)
This book reminds me of an Agatha Christie novel. A real whodunit where
even I couldn't figure out the villain. Not only was one case solved but
another old one was too. The characters were quaint and loving even the
villains were amusing. I often thought of Fitzjohn as Sherlock Holmes
especially with his sidekick Betts tossing back and forth all the details of
this mystery. Worth reading.

This mystery takes place in Austraila. There is a murder and while
investigating, the detectives and constables find there are actually
several mysteries that rather overlap. With few exceptions their
witnesses and persons of interest tell one lie after the other. Most of
which are easily disproved. This is just a great who dunnit with
enjoyable characters and an interesting story line. One real mystery is
how constable Betts' shoes found their way into his supervisors airing
cupboard.Wait until you meet Ms Timmons, she is so real you'll want to invite her over for tea.

Cant get enough of Jill Paterson's DCI Fitzjohn. This story exposes
some of his personal problems, loved the tree problem, as well as his
kindness and thoughtfulness to some of the victims family. A
complicated family and their acquaintances plus actions taking place in
familiar local areas all combine to keep your interest till the end of
the book.

A little police politics, a new murder, an old murder and tangled
business relationships. There were many important characters almost
too many to keep track of, but the solution was clever and all was
clear in the end.

I started this book completely unfamiliar with the author or the series. As it turned out, I couldn't put it down! In fact, I carried it with me while doing dishes and laundry so that I could finish it all in one afternoon! Lane's End is a refreshingly old fashioned mystery told from the notoriously hard to write (and not often seen) dual point of view. Each chapter is a delicious morsel that leaves you longing for more. The plot is ingenious and keeps you guessing, and the characters most certainly aren't trite. I can't wait to go back and read the first three books in the series now!5.0 out of 5 stars

I picked up Land's End by Jill Paterson because
it was free at the time. I've never read any of the other books in this
series (although I intend to change that promptly) and had no idea of
what to expect.
What I got was a classic murder mystery. Wonderfully written and plotted. I won't give a summary because so many other reviewers have already done so, but I will say that this book could have been written in the Golden Age of mysteries...I'm not afraid to say that this book reminds me very much of Agatha Christie at her best: a complex plot with many suspects, interesting twists and turns, and a bit of romance on the side.

This is a great police procedural based in
Australia. The plot always keeps me guessing (and I have read alot of
police procedural mysteries). This books stand up well next to Barry
Maitland's book (Aussie who writes Scotland Yard mysteries). I highly

I have now read all four of the Fitzjohn
mysteries, and I enjoy each successive one more. Paterson writes a very
good tale with lots of surprises along the way and keeps one guessing
until the very end. I look forward to reading the next adventure of
Fitzjohn - I hope he can fend off his nasty neighbor and continue
tending his orchids!

Fitzjohn and his team would make a great PBS Series. Ms. Paterson writes with incredible detail and excellent dialog. It is a wonderful read when you can picture the characters and details as the story progresses. I eagerly await the next instalment.
Another Great Fitzjohn Novel!
Another Great Fitzjohn Novel!
I read Jill's first novel, Murder On The Rocks, before I read the Celtic Dagger and was looking forward to finding out more about how she introduced Chief Inspector Fitzjohn, her likable "Sherlock Holmes" type main character who her continuing series of murder mystery novels revolves around. I wasn't disappointed.
ReplyDeleteThe Celtic Dagger is a well written mystery that grabs you and doesn't let go until you get to the end and find out who the real culprit is...and it will surprize you. Jill's intiguing story involves family dsyfunction, greed, infidelity, stolen priceless artifacts, and blackmail, all great ingrediants for a fantasy escape into the darker side of human beings.
The Celtic Dagger was a well deserving winner of the NSW Writers' Centre New Holland Publishers 2009 Genre Fiction Award
Jill's Fitsjohn novels are set in and around Sydney Australia and as an American, I find the references to the scenarios fascinating.
A must read for all those who love a great escape novel that keeps you guessing till the end!
I meant to say I read Jill's second novel before I read The Celtic Dagger.
